Flying Purple People Eater Cake Balls

by Erin

This post and recipe was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek! Giveaway is sponsored but I did not personally receive any complimentary products. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s – flying purple people eaters! These adorable Halloween truffles are made out of cake balls, with sandwich cookie wings, and a candy corn horn!

Google may shun me for this, but I made another flying purple people eater recipe! I love the thumbprint version I made so much I had to do it again (and again with milkshakes).

To be honest, I wasn’t originally planning this recipe at all until I discovered purple birthday cake flavored knock-off Oreos at Kroger (thanks Kita) and was brainstorming ideas of what to make with them.

I have a really bad habit of buying every special edition Oreo I find and then waiting too long to decide on what to make with them. My go-to is usually mini cheesecakes because they are the perfect size for a crust. And I really love cheesecake. But I have used them in Halloween cupcakes too!

While pondering what type of buckeye candy I should make this year (I challenge myself to come up with a new version every football season), it occurred to me that I could utilize that same dipping technique to make one eyed monsters! And thus these cuties were born.

Unfortunately for them, despite their name they are being eaten by more people than they are eating themselves, haha!

This also marks my last recipe for #HalloweenTreatsWeek so make sure to enter the giveaway located at the bottom fo this post! But there will be one more day of recipes tomorrow.

FLYING PURPLE PEOPLE EATER CAKE BALLS

Print
Yield: 4 dozen
Nutrition facts: 200 calories 20 grams fat

Ingredients

CAKE BALLS

  • 1-1/2 cups heat-treated all-purpose flour*
  • 1 cup heat-treated white or yellow cake mix*
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3-4 Tbsp milk

DECORATING

Directions

  1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer beat together butter and sugar until combined. Add cake mix, flour, salt, and vanilla and mix thoroughly. Add milk one tablespoon at a time until it reaches cookie dough consistency.
  3. Roll dough into small balls (approx 2 cm – I used a small cookie scoop) and place on prepared baking sheet. Insert toothpicks into the top of each, then chill for at least 30 minutes. Can be made ahead.
  4. Melt chocolate in a metal bowl over a pan of lightly simmering water (double boiler). Stir occasionally until smooth; remove from heat.
  5. Dip cake balls into melted chocolate leaving a circle uncovered at the base of the toothpick. Return to wax paper with the toothpick sideways, and immediately press a candy corn on top and one quarter of a cookie on each side. Repeat with remaining cake balls.
  6. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until set. Remove toothpicks and place a candy eye over the hole. Serve immediately or store in fridge.

Notes

*Heat treat by heating in microwave to 160 degrees F – about 1 minute stirring every 15 seconds.

two comments: 1) you will always get me with Purple People Eater anything, even if it’s something I would not make. That was one of the best songs of 1962. 2) I am shocked to see that the Ghost Chili was 7 years ago. I’ve been dreaming about it and it’s on my menu plan for the next time I cook. :-)
