DIY Painter’s Tape Accent Wall

Easily create geometric wall art or accent wall using painter’s tape and your choice of paint colors. Just tape, paint, peel, and admire!

When I first started looking at places to live in Columbus, I proclaimed that I was going to paint the walls for once. Every place I have rented I have resisted painting because I rationalized that I wouldn’t be living there long enough to bother with it. But after over a decade of boring white and/or tan walls in every room I needed to paint some walls!

Since Columbus welcomed us with negative temperatures and snow, it seemed like the perfect weather to stay indoors and paint. The first area that was attacked was the front entryway. After perusing Pinterest I found this gem where you lay out strips of painter’s tape in a random geometric pattern.

Two rolls of tape later and I was ready for some marshmallow paint! Yes I bought white paint named marshmallow. When deciding between a bunch of whites that all look the same, wouldn’t you have done the same thing?

And yes I realize that I just complained about too much white/tan walls in my past but this is marshmallow white dang it… and I am making shapes with it along with a nice bold accent color. Which means the next step was singling out a few shapes and painting them with a shade of turquoise (obviously it didn’t have a memorable enough name).

Now comes the difficult part – waiting for the paint to dry and not painting more splotches. It was also during this time that I started second guessing my color choices and almost switched to gray. But I’m glad I didn’t.

Once the paint was fully dry the next day, I got to unveil my masterpiece by peeling off all the tape! And I am pretty excited about how it turned out.

As for the rest of the house, I didn’t end up painting every room but did enough to break up the monotony. One wall in the guest room was also painted with the turquoise color and the master was painted a gray color with a hint of purple (see my post on Instagram).

Eventually I hope to share photos of the entire place but we are still working on organizing everything they way we want. Just the other day I reorganized all my holiday baking supplies into cute baskets that live on top of the kitchen cabinets. There have been a lot of trips to JoAnn Fabrics and Home Depot.
