Today marks the end of Southern Decadence in New Orleans, LA. Last year Bob and I were unintentionally in town for it and ran into some friends from Memphis and had a complete blast!

If watching your newly minted husband get relentlessly hit on isn’t the best way to spend your honeymoon, I don’t know what is. I just love how comfortable he is in his own skin and being able to play along. So when our friends said it wouldn’t be the same without us this year, we seriously considered going but it didn’t work out.

New Orleans Southern Decadence

Instead I decided to mix up my very own Voodoo Daiquiri aka Purple Drank from Lafitte’s Olde Blacksmith Shop Bar on Bourbon Street. Last year, Bob didn’t get the memo that you shouldn’t have more than a one (hello Everclear).

Not only did he have more than one, he ordered the large. Twice. And possibly two smalls, we’re not entirely sure O:-). But we made it back to out ArBNB just fine with our memories in tact. This time we will enjoy a glass in the comfort of our own home. ;-)

I love the range for the clear spirit- you can either do Everclear, or Vodka.

My July, 2021 trip to NOLA found me at Lafitte’s multiple times (my favorite place in the Quarter) with Purple Drank in hand. At one point, my wife and I had 5 empties on the table and we did move on without any catastrophes. An early 60’s 1st time tourist to the area sat behind me and I felt a tap on my shoulder. She informed me this was her first trip to New Orleans and besides a Hurricane, she didn’t know what to order. I encouraged her to go up to the nice bartender and said, “Just go tell that handsome dude you’d like a Purple Drank.” She raised her eyebrow and asked, “Purple Drank, huh?” Yep. And I told her to order only one and see how she’s feeling about 10 minutes after she finishes it before deciding on a 2nd one. Needless to say, she got one and she was on #2, giggling and grinning ear to ear when we departed. She thanked me, I told her to be safe and thus, her love of the Voodoo Daquiri was born.

With that vibrant purple color, it would also be a great drink for Halloween!

How fun! The drink sounds like a good one, but better made with vodka (IMO).

I will admit I made mine with grape vodka just because it’s what I had and didn’t feel like going to the store to buy more.
