Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone #BookClubCookbookCC

by Erin

The Book Club Cookbook Cooking Crew is lead by Cam of Culinary Adventures with Camilla. You can find out all about it in her announcement post.

Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone

This month I got to pick the book from which myself and the rest of the Book Club Cookbook Cooking Crew would be cooking. At the beginning of the month, I posted an invitation to read one of my favorite book series starting with the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Whether you read the book or not, you were also invited to cook a Treacle Tart or to pull inspiration from it or the book to create something of your own.

Being that feasts in the Great Hall at Hogwarts remind me of Thanksgiving I was really excited to see what everyone was inspired to make! Most everyone was very excited to reread the book and many plan on continuing with the remainder of the series. Even though I just reread them last year in preparation for a Harry Potter Trivia night (which my team won BTW), I might have to join them.

As usual our leader, Camilla (Culinary Adventures with Camilla) was the first to submit her recipe this month despite admitting that even after giving it a second chance she wasn’t a fan of the book. While I cannot imagine my life without Harry Potter, it’s hard to know if I would love it at much reading it for the first time as an adult instead of as a kid when it first came out. But I digress, Camilla was a great sport and made Pumpkin Pasties inspired by the trolley cart on the Hogwarts Express.

Treacle Tart

Shannon (Zooey Stuff) was the only other person that made the Treacle Tart, even though she was freaked out by the recipe using bread crumbs in the filling. I was surprised as well when I first read the recipe and agree with her that it is crazy sweet. I had to break it up with ice cream on top of mine! Fun fact? Treacle Tart is a staple of poorer families, incorporating two basic ingredients: bread and sugar.

Chocolate Frogs 2

Amy (Amy’s Cooking Adventures) made Chocolate Frogs! Even though she could have purchased chocolate frog molds, she instead wanted to use ingredients she had on hand like Oreos, chocolate, and pretzels. And what kid wouldn’t love these cutesy little frogs?! Heck I’m in love with them myself.

Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond Ice Cream

Wendy (A Day in the Life on the Farm) made Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond Ice Cream. She was inspired by Chapter 5 when Hagrid is seen outside the window holding ice cream for Harry while he is meeting Malfoy for the first time. If we only knew then what that encounter would develop into!

Chewy Butterfinger Chocolate Chip Cookies (2)

Emily (Life on Food) originally planned on making Butterbeer but discovered that it doesn’t come up yet in this book. Instead, she pulled inspiration from the decadent Thanksgiving feast that the students partake in and ended up making large, indulgent Chewy Butterfinger Chocolate Chip Cookies which include rice crispy cereal, Butterfinger candy and chocolate chips.

Sarah (The Pajama Chef) was trying to cut back on the amount of desserts already floating around her house and instead remembered that Harry’s Christmas feast at Hogwarts included all the traditional holiday fixings–turkey, potatoes, rolls, and cranberry sauce! She admitted that she actually doesn’t enjoy most of the tradition dishes at Thanksgiving but does have a soft spot for cranberry sauce and made a Cranberry Pear Sauce!

Butterbeer and Pumpkin Pasties

Andrea (Adventures in All Things Food)and her kids loved story time with this book! After the appearance of the pumpkin pasties on the treat cart on the Hogwarts Express, she decided to make a variation with sage and browned butter. She also made an adult version of Butterbeer using Pumpkin Ale as a base. I would love to have those paired together!

Mini Leek and Bacon Pies

Sarah (Things I Make (for Dinner)) made Mini Leek and Bacon Pies. Being in Canada she actually had a copy of the British version titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone! While this recipe is not a direct tie-in to the book, it’s definitely British-like and mentions that there are actually many references to bacon in the book. How I missed that is beyond me, but you surely won’t miss the bacon in these cute little pies!

Butterbeer Cupcakes 02

Last but not least, Renee (Tortillas and Honey) made Butterbeer Cupcakes. Even though butterbeer doesn’t appear in this book she couldn’t help herself and had to try a butterbeer recipe. If you like butterscotch and/or love the Harry Potter series, you should give these cupcakes a try! I certainly wouldn’t mind a couple.

Make sure you join us next month as Sarah from The Pajama Chef hosts with Peace Like a River by Leif Enger.
