Red Monster Spinach Smoothie

Love adding spinach to your smoothies but hate the color it creates? Substitute with heirloom red spinach and you’ll completely forget that you ever added any spinach!

Red Monster Spinach Smoothie 1

Have you seen the red heirloom spinach yet? I spied it at Trader Joe’s recently and immediately snagged a couple bags. Originally I bought it just because I was already planning to buy spinach for salad but then my thought process shifted to creating spinach smoothies that were not green or brown for a change. I make them on a fairly regular basis and sometimes get bored with the color. Sure enough this spinach smoothie is so beautifully red that you would never guess there was spinach in it. It’s very similar to my green smoothie spinach smoothie but I use my the Sage Boss blender and use raspberries and pomegranate juice instead of pineapple/mango and almond milk. One time I made it with coconut water and instantly fell in love.

RED MONSTER SPINACH SMOOTHIE

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1/2 frozen sliced banana

1/2 cup fresh or frozen raspberries

1/4 cup nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt (I used 0% vanilla Chobani)

1/2 cup pomegranate juice

2 cups (approximately) red baby spinach

1/2 Tbsp flax seeds (optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. (I used a bullet blender and add the spinach last, stuffing in as much as I can fit.)

[…] Despite the green-ness, my reaction to this smoothie may have even been better than to the non-green spinach-containing smoothie. It was creamy and slightly sweet without a single sign of spinach, other than the color. I loved it so much I even made a red spinach version! […]

I have not seen the red heirloom spinach yet and now I am intrigued! This red monster smoothie looks amazing. Red spinach sounds like a great way to fool people who hate green smoothies :)

I’ve never seen red spinach before, but I’ll have to keep an eye out for it, because this actually looks like a smoothie I’d make! I have to admit, I do find the color of smoothies with regular spinach rather off-putting… but problem solved, thanks to you!

Oh my gosh what a great idea for that Heirloom Red Spinach from Trader Joe’s! My husband is just starting with a round of juicing and I will have to mention this idea to him. One thing I’ve noticed about that red spinach from TJ’s though is that you have to use it the first day, it doesn’t last.

I haven;t hard trouble with it lasting more than 1 day, granted I usually use it all within 3 days of purchasing!

Yeah, I already thought about that. May have to do it with green. The only possible place to find it here would be Sprouts, which is way over on the far side of town. I will check there the next time we go over that way. We were told that we would be getting a store in August, on our side of town, but I’ll believe that when I see it. I would love to have a healthy grocery within easy distance.

It must be nice to live in a place where you have Trader Joe’s locally and can get things like red spinach. Our nearest TJ’s is in Albuquerque, which is 200+ miles away. We’ll be headed to San Antonio this weekend, which requires a trip to TJ’s, so I’ll check out the spinach (no way to keep it good to get it home). Lack of red spinach here aside, this sounds like a great smoothie. I’m definitely saving the recipe, just in case…

Definitely a bummer to be without a Trader Joe’s. When I lived in Memphis the closest one was 2.5 hours away in Nashville so I understand. I wonder if someplace like Fresh Market or Whole Foods would carry it? Either way you could still make this with regular spinach, it just won’t be as pretty.

Whaaat–green smoothies without the color of troll bogeys?! (Just kidding–those are gray, anyway!) But dang, totally checking out the red spinach at TJ’s this week!

What?!?!? I have never heard of or seen this gorgeous spinach! We do have a Trader Joe’s not too far away, so I’m going to look for it next time. Beautiful!
