Inedible Favorites – Luke’s 3rd Birthday & Tool Cut-Out Cookies

by Erin

Do you know a DIY-er, tool-man, handy-man, fixer of all things? Then I think they need these tool shaped cut-out cookies!

Tool Cut-Out Cookies 1

Two weeks ago my sister-in-law sent me an e-mail with the title “Question for you which will turn into a ridiculous favor‏”. With my nephew Luke’s 3rd birthday on the horizon I already suspected it to be related to his birthday and I was excited about any prospect of being involved. Since I am unfortunately unable to be there this weekend for his birthday party that means I also am not there to help out with the bulk of the baking (for example see birthday #1 and #2). While I could not exactly mail a cake, she did ask if I would be willing to make some tool cut-out cookies if she sent me the cookie cutters for their construction site party. After looking at the images she sent describing what she hoped for them to look like, I got excited as the only time I’ve played with royal icing was for my petri dish cookies (which by the way is one of my proud nerd-baker fusion moments).

While I do have some work to do when it comes to perfecting the art that is royal icing, thankfully I am only trying to impress a 3 year old. Of course I still waited in anticipation as I tracked the package navigating it’s way to their doorstep yesterday. But after seeing how crazy excited he was after making his blue truck cake last year, helping dress him up as a toolbox for Halloween, and his general desire to always be around when tools are involved (wearing his “ears” and “eyes” protection) I figured I could do no wrong as long as they even remotely looked like tools. Thanks to my careful packaging skills there was only one casualty and I cannot wait for him to see them! Now the question is, will he devour them or want to treasure them? I’m not sure which would be preferred.

By the way, while I did not type up a step-by-step recipe/tutorial for these cookies, you can check out my petri dish cookies to get the cookie dough and royal icing recipes that I used. All I changed were the shapes and food coloring. Click HERE to go to that post.

This is such an adorable cookie for a birthday party. My grandfather worked in construction for 30 plus years and would probably love these as well! Haha.
