Review: Savory Pies

by Erin

Did you know that you can have pie for dinner? I introduce to you, “Savory Pies”! It’s a new full-color cookbook filled with recipes for seasoned meats, vegetables and cheeses baked in perfectly flaky pie crusts. There are even 5 different types of crusts to choose from, and one is gluten-free.

Using these crust recipes you can make tarts, galettes, cobblers and cute little hand pies among the 60+ creative and comforting savory pie recipes in this book. Enjoy Chicken Pot Pie, Jerk-Spiced Caribbean Meat Patties, Crawfish & Corn Turnovers, Garlic and Rosemary Pizzettes and more. Some recipes even offer wine pairings, which is something I am clueless about besides drinking wines I like.

Savory Pies

The first thing I had to try was that gorgeous looking calzone pictured on the top of the front cover – Arugula, Black Olive, and Sun-Dried Tomato. The original recipe made two large calzones, but I decided to make 4 smaller hand-held calzones for a on-the-go dinner and they came out great. I cut back a little on the black olives and minced them up really small but that’s just because I’m not a huge fan. It also was suggested to pair with a dry rose, but I didn’t think drinking wine while driving was a good combination.

Next I tried the cute little Cotija Cheese Bocaditos with Charred Chiles. This appetizer is made with a cream cheese crust and stuffed with cotija, cream cheese and roasted Anaheim and serrano chile peppers. They were awesome! Although I had expected these to be a bit spicier, but that can be adjusted but using more of the pepper and/or seeds. I also think these would be great with a dip, but I haven’t been able to think of anything besides dipping into more cheese. Thoughts?

With so many cookbooks in my collection being sweet-oriented, I think this cookbook was a good addition.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this cookbook to review from Beth Cook Publicity. I was not compensated for this post. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
