Review: Sweets on a Stick

by Erin

What is it about putting food on a stick that makes it instantly more fun? Whatever magic is at play, Linda Vandermeer took it upon herself to create an entire cookbook full of fast, fun, and easy desserts all on a stick. Your dessert can now travel wherever you go with Sweets on a Stick: More than 150 Kid-Friendly Recipes for Cakes, Candies, and Pies on the Go! . This cookbook provides recipes for eye-catching cake pops, mini pies, cookies, marshmallow kabobs, and much more. There are even some unique creations perfect for the holidays throughout the year.

This cookbook also contains general tips and tricks when making stick-ed treats. Remember the flower bouquet cake pops I made for my mom? I used tips relating to cake pops from this cookbook to make those, and they turned out beautiful so obviously Linda knows what she’s doing.

But of course I couldn’t just use the tips section, I had to get down into the recipes themselves and try out a couple. I started with the Chocolate Chip Cookie Truffle Pops. The basis for these is much like Oreo truffles, but instead of grinding up Oreo cookies in the food processor with cream cheese, you throw in store-bought chocolate chip cookies instead! This results in a pop that tastes just like chocolate chip cookie dough, and it was super easy to make. I brought them to a friends party and they were a huge hit.

The other recipe I tried was the S’more Dipped Pops. This one caught my attention because it allowed me to make s’mores in my oven – no fire-pit required! The only slight draw back is that you must wait for the marshmallow to cool once sandwiched in order for the pops to be sturdy enough to dip into the melted chocolate. But with how simple they were to make (and delicious even without the super gooey marshmallow), how could you not like something this cute? I would love to make these again and add chopped nuts or candies onto the chocolate. Colored sprinkles would also be a great way to make these festive!

Next, I hope to dive into some of the pies on a stick because I think they are the neatest things. What’s your favorite treat on a stick that you have seen?

Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of Sweets on a Stick to review from Adams Media. I was not compensated for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
